The IPL (Indian Premier League) 2025 mega auction has already broken records quite early into the event. Being held in Jeddah, the auction saw Shreyas Iyer become the most expensive buy in IPL auction history after he was roped in by Punjab Kings for INR 26.75 crore.

However, star India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant came under the hammer and instantly broke the record. After several sides like Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Lucknow Super Giants, and Sunrisers Hyderabad continued to bid for Pant, it eventually boiled down to SRH and LSG.

After LSG locked in the final bid at INR 20.75 crore, Delhi Capitals used their RTM card for Pant. However, as LSG set a record of a whopping INR 27 crore, Capitals backed out as Pant became the most expensive buy in IPL auction history till now. It is interesting to note that Pant has played 111 matches in the IPL so far, where he has scored 3,284 runs in the process.

Rishabh Pant expected to be next LSG skipper

With Lucknow having secured Pant’s services, the star player could be named the side’s skipper ahead of IPL 2025. Ahead of the auction, Lucknow made the huge decision of letting go regular skipper KL Rahul, who had been leading the side since the IPL 2022.

After leading Lucknow to back-to-back playoffs in the IPL 2022 and 2023, the KL Rahul-led side failed to do so in 2024. LSG finished the IPL 2024 in seventh place in the standings. The side won seven matches and lost the remaining seven.

With the services of Pant secured, Lucknow Super Giants could make him their new skipper and hope for a good season and their first IPL title as well.
