India fell into the trap they had set for New Zealand in the second Test at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune as Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips ruled the roost with the ball in spin-friendly conditions in the first session on Day 2.

Fans turned up to the stadium on Friday, October 24 to watch the Indian batters continuing from where they had left in the second innings of the first Test in Bengaluru. Overnight batters Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal curbed their natural attacking instincts and tried to get accustomed to the tricky surface. Santner had the ball on a string as he went past the outside edge of Shubman on several occasions and also rapped him on the pads a few times with the arm ball. Yashasvi didn't get much of the strike in the partnership but looked more assured against the left-arm spin duo of Santner and Ajaz Patel.

They survived a few close calls as the spinners were getting a lot of purchases from the surface. After adding 34 runs to the overnight score, Shubman was sent packing by a Santner delivery that came in with the arm. This opened the floodgates for the tourists as they kept chipping away at the wickets with their excellent exploitation of the conditions.

Virat Kohli played around a full-length delivery from Santner and was cleaned up for one. Jaiswal's dogged innings was ended by Glenn Phillips as the off-spinner picked up his first wicket in the Test match. The onus would have been on Rishabh Pant to bail his team out of trouble once again. However, the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed by Phillips for a 19-ball 18.

Sarfaraz Khan fell to a loose shot against Santner as he lost his patience. Ravichandran Ashwin also perished on the stroke of Lunch as India were left reeling at 103/7. They lost six wickets in the morning session after getting to 50/1 at one stage.

Santner was the wrecker-in-chief as he bagged his maiden four-for in Test cricket. Phillips also chipped in with a couple of wickets as New Zealand reigned supreme in the first session.
