Twitter Reactions: Punjab Kings hold nerves to edge past Mumbai Indians in high-voltage run-fest
Punjab won their fourth game of the IPL 2023 season.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) narrowly won against Mumbai Indians (MI) by 13 runs in a hard-fought thrilling run-fest as the two franchises squared off at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, April 22.
Rohit Sharma, skipper of the Mumbai Indians, won the toss and elected to field first. Punjab’s opening duo of Matthew Short and Prabhsimran Singh could only manage to get 18 runs between them before the former was sent packing for 11 runs.
Short was dismissed by Cameron Green and it was followed by Arjun Tendulkar getting the scalp of Prabhsimran for 26 runs. Veteran spinner Piyush Chawla too struck twice in one over to dismiss star all-rounder Liam Livingstone and Atharva Taide to put Punjab Kings on the backfoot.
As Punjab began losing grip on the innings, in came skipper Sam Curran and Harpreet Singh. The pair injected massive momentum to get the big runs and raised a 92-run partnership in just 50 balls. Despite the slow start and early fall of wickets, PBKS were looking at a score of over 200 runs, courtesy of Curran and Harpreet’s impressive knocks.
While Curran got four sixes and five fours to score 55 runs off mere 29 balls, Harpreet’s 28-ball 41 included two maximums and four boundaries. Punjab were further aided by Jitesh Sharma, who got into the groove swiftly, slamming four towering sixes in his blazing 7-ball 25 runs to help Punjab post a humongous 214. Meanwhile, Green and Piyush returned with two wickets each whereas Arjun, Behrendorff and Jofra Archer got one each to wrap up the innings.
Mumbai deal with maximums during chase
Considering that Punjab posted a massive total, the home side required a solid start by the opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. However, Punjab extended their domination as Arshdeep Singh got the prized scalp of Kishan in the second over to keep MI reeling in the chase.
Despite the early wicket, skipper Rohit shifted gears instantly and began hammering the rival bowling unit. Star all-rounder Cameron Green too joined the party as he stitched an important partnership to help Mumbai claw their way back into the contest.
Rohit and Green added 76 runs for the second wicket but it came to a halt as the former departed for 44 off 27 balls. Suryakumar Yadav did not waste much time and notched up his half-century with two maximums and seven fours in mere 23 balls. Impact Player Nathan Ellis got the important wicket of Green for 67 runs just when Mumbai were in a better position to clinch the two points from the clash.
With the high-voltage action coming down to the wire, Mumbai needed 16 off six balls to secure the win. Arshdeep held his nerves and took the game away from the home team. Notably, the left-arm pacer got two wickets on the trot to make the chase harder for Mumbai as Punjab won the contest by 13 runs.
