Multan Sultans registered a big 56-run win over Peshawar Zalmi in the fifth match of the Pakistan Super League 2023 on Friday (February 17). Rilee Rossouw's remarkable knock of 75 off just 36 helped Sultans post a big 210/3 total while batting first. Then impressive three-wicket spells from Usama Mir and Ihsanullah guided Sultans to a crucial win.

Babar Azam won the toss for Peshawar and elected to chase with one change in form of Carlos Brathwaite coming in for Akeal Hosein. Multans side also made one surprise change to their playing XI, which beat Gladiators by nine wickets, with Rovman Powell replacing Shakib Al Hasan.

However, Babar's decision to bowl first proved costly as the Sultans' batters dominated the innings with another big total. Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan pulled off a quick 54-run partnership for the opening wicket in 7.2 overs. Salman Irshad gave Peshawar an opening with Shan's wicket who scored 20 off 25 but Rizwan continued to smash the bowlers with another fifty.

Rizwan and Rossouw put in a 62-run partnership for the second wicket with the former scoring 66 off 42. But it was the South African who stole the show by smashing 75 runs at a strike rate of 208.33. David Miller and Kieron Pollard further added with quick cameo knocks to post a big total on the scoreboard.

Young wicketkeeper batter Mohamamd Haris gave Peshawar the quick start they needed with a 41-run stand with Babar off just 25 balls. But Babar was adjudged Leg Before Wicket (LBW) on Ihsanullah's delivery in the fifth over after scoring just nine runs.

Haris and Saim Ayub, 20, kept the runs flowing with another quick 47-run partnership for the second wicket to keep Peshawar alive in the chase. Abbas Afridi ran Haris out in the ninth over who scored 40 off 23 but Ayub managed to register a crucial fifty.

Last match's hero Tom Kohler-Cadmore managed to score just three runs and Powell added quick 23 runs as the Sultans bowlers dominated the middle overs. Usama Mir took big wickets of Kohler-Cadmore and Bhanuka Rajapaksa while Abbas dismissed Powell.

Usama bagged Saim Ayub's big wicket to complete his spell with three for 22 and then Peshawar collapsed like a house of cards. Ihsanullah took two more wickets to bowl Peshawar out for just 154 runs in 18.5 overs. The win helped Sultans to further cement their place at the top with two wins from the opening three games while Peshawar Zalmi remain in third place with a win from their opening two games.
