The action continued as MI Cape Town staged an outstanding display, securing an eight-wicket victory against Paarl Royals in the ongoing SA20 2024 at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday, January 19. This triumph marked their second win in the tournament, having played four games so far.
In pursuit of a 173-run target, MI asserted their dominance from the beginning of the second innings. Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton spearheaded the charge, forming an impressive 80-run partnership for the opening wicket. Although van der Dussen fell to Tabraiz Shamsi after scoring 41, Rickelton stood resilient, guiding the hosts to victory with 19 balls to spare. This handed the Royals their first defeat in the ongoing tournament. The 27-year-old struck an unbeaten 94 off a mere 52 deliveries, featuring seven boundaries and six maximums, and went on to win the Player of the Match award. On the other hand, Shamsi secured his second wicket by dismissing Dewald Brevis for 10.
Earlier, Paarl Royals posted a total of 172 runs after being asked to bat first. The Royals got off to a solid start with Jason Roy and Jos Buttler contributing 62 runs in 4.3 overs. Rabada delivered a full-length delivery on the off stump, prompting Roy to attempt a scoop past short fine leg. However, the lack of pace worked in favor of van der Dussen, who executed a brilliant catch. Roy notched up a quick 38 runs from just 14 deliveries, featuring one four and five sixes.
Following the loss of their first wicket, Buttler attempted to stabilize the innings, but he too was eventually dismissed for 46. Meanwhile, the middle-order batters struggled against MI's bowling attack. Thomas Kaber played a pivotal role for MI, securing a three-wicket haul while conceding just 20 runs. In addition to Rabada, Olly Stone, George Linde, and Sam Curran each claimed one wicket.
