UP Warriorz put an end to Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians’ five-match winning streak as the former emerged victorious by five wickets. The two sides squared off at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Saturday, March 18 in Match 15 of the Women's Premier League (WPL).

With the business end of the season approaching, Alyssa Healy and Co. were in desperate need of a win to get the side closer to a place in the playoffs. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians have comfortably cemented their spot in the top three and are marching towards a place in the finals of the event.

Speaking about the match, UP Warriorz won the toss and put the opposition to bat first in the clash. Though Mumbai headed into the contest as the favourites, the Warriorz from UP put their best foot forward in order to obtain a result in their favour.

The Warriorz got Yastika Bhatia’s scalp for just seven runs and things went all south for the Indians from there on. The explosive hitter from the Caribbean, Hayley Matthews tried to put up a decent knock but could only manage to get a 30-ball 34 whereas skipper Harmanpreet got 25 runs before heading back to the dugout.

The dismissals at regular intervals handed the Warriorz a major boost in the clash. Despite a quickfire 19-ball 32 by Issy Wong, Mumbai were restricted to a meagre 127 runs. Sophie Ecclestone’s three-wicket haul saw her remain on level terms with Saika Ishaque for the most wickets (12) taken in the WPL.

Mumbai fight hard but Warriorz remain on top

The Mumbai bowling unit left no stone unturned to fight back despite having posted a paltry total. Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews, and Issy Wong provided vital early strikes as the trio got a wicket each in under 30 runs.

Despite pressure swiftly mounting on the UP-based franchise, middle-order batters- Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris played vital knocks to revive the chase. Tahlia got 38 runs whereas Grace scored 39 to get the side close to the total before the duo was sent packing by Amelia Kerr.

With 13 required off the final two overs, Sophie Ecclestone and Deepti Sharma steered the side to get to the finish line with a win by five wickets. In doing so, Mumbai were handed their first loss in the league and ended their five-match winning streak.

Superb Cricket. South Africans wholly impressed with the die another day attitude. Sune Luis is world cricket's best captain right now? If SA beat Aus then? I think so. #SAvENG #T20WorldCup

Amelia Kerr is a performer all-rounder of supreme qualities. Just opposite to Deepti Sharma who takes wickets in death and scores when not necessarily urgent 😬 #WPL2023 #MIvUPW

When it comes to power hitting, Indian players are way behind than Australian and English players . Even their bowlers can hit six with more ease than Indian batsman . #WPL2023
