The United States of America and Bangladesh kicked off their three-game T20I series ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup 2024. Both teams faced off in the first T20I at the Prairie View Cricket Complex on Tuesday, May 21. The clash began with Bangladesh coming in to bat first after losing the toss.

The side got off to a subpar start as openers Litton Das and Soumya Sarkar were dismissed for 14 and 20 runs, respectively. Furthermore, after the lacklustre start, things went from bad to worse as skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto was dismissed for just three runs. Finding the Bangla Tigers in a spot of bother, it was the knock of Towhid Hridoy that stabilised the innings for the visitors.

Scoring 58 runs in 47 deliveries, Hridoy played a resilient knock against the Americans, and the same was followed by Mahmudullah adding 31 runs on the board in 22 deliveries. The visitors managed to post a total of 153 runs in the first innings, losing six wickets in the process.

As for the USA, Steven Taylor was the highest wicket-taker in the first innings, with two wickets to his name. Saurabh Netravalkar, Ali Khan, and Jessy Singh took one wicket each as well.

Resilience in middle order propelled USA to first T20I win

Aiming to chase down a target of 154 runs, the USA got off to a subpar start as well. Openers Taylor and Monank Patel departed after scoring 28 and 12 runs, respectively. Andries Gous added 23 runs in 18 deliveries, with Aaron Jones and Nitish Kumar being sent back to the pavilion for four and 10 runs, respectively.

As the USA looked to be slipping, the knocks of Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh propelled the side to a historic win. Anderson stayed unbeaten on a score of 34 runs in 25 deliveries, whereas Harmeet Singh scored a mesmerizing 33* runs off mere 13 deliveries as the hosts chased down the target with three balls to spare and won the game by five wickets.

This was the first time that USA beat a full-member nation in a T20I game, making it a historic win for the co-hosts of the T20 World Cup. This win will give them a major boost not only for the remainder of the series, but also for the upcoming home world cup.
