Twitter Reactions: Yashasvi Jaiswal stands tall against rampant England on Day 1

India had a decent start to the second Test against England as they finished Day 1 on 336/6 on Friday, February 02 in Visakhapatnam. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was the lone warrior for the hosts on the day as he registered his highest Test score of 179* (257) with the help of 17 fours and five sixes. Apart from him, no other Indian batter could score over 34 runs as everyone threw away their starts.

India got off to a steady start in the day after choosing to bat first as openers Rohit Sharma (14 off 41) and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 40 runs for the first wicket off 105 balls. However, England struck early in the day as debutant Shoaib Bashir got the big scalp of the Indian captain in the 18^th over. Struggling Shubman Gill walked in at number 3 desperate to get a big score against his name and got set at the crease.

Jaiswal and Gill added 49 runs for the second wicket, however, their stand was broken on the brink of lunch as Anderson got rid of Gill (34 off 46). India went into lunch on 103/2 after 31 overs with Jaiswal (51) and Shreyas Iyer (4) at the crease.

Post lunch, Jaiswal shifted gears and completed his second Test century in 151 balls with the help of 11 fours and three sixes. He got involved in a massive 90-run stand with Shreyas Iyer who couldn’t convert his start (27 off 59) into a big score falling prey to Tom Hartley in the second session.

Debutant Rajat Patidar walked in at number five and showed great composure as he took India to tea alongside Jaiswal with the score on 225/3. In the final session, the duo extended their partnership to 70 which was brought to an end by an unlucky dismissal of Patidar.

England got three wickets in third session

The right-handed batter defended Rehan Ahmed but the ball rolled onto his stumps. The partnerships continued to develop for India with Axar Patel (27 off 51) also adding 52 runs for the fifth wicket with Jaiswal looking imperious at the crease. 

He completed his 150 with a boundary against Joe Root and further brought up his highest Test score with a maximum. At the other end, England managed to get two more wickets in the form of Axar Patel (27 off 51) and KS Bharat (17 off 23) before Ravichandran Ashwin (5* off 10) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (179* off 257) took India to stumps.
