U19 Women's World Cup 2023: Twitter lauds Shafali-Shweta's brilliance as India trump UAE by 122 runs
The Indian team has registered its second win in the tournament and it has now propelled them to the top of Group D.
The Indian U19 Women's team has registered its second consecutive win in the tournament by beating the UAE by a whopping 122 runs.
By virtue of the win, the Indian team now sits at the top of the points table in Group D. This massive win over the UAE has also boosted India's net run rate to a great extent. India now have a net run rate of 4.083 and are miles ahead of the UAE who are placed at the second spot on the table in Group D at a net run rate of -2.528.
Getting back to the game, UAE's skipper Theertha Satish won the toss and elected to field first at the Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Monday, 16th January. But her decision backfired as she played in to the hands of India. The opening pair of skipper Shafali Verma and Shweta Sehrawat was phenomenal yet again.
Shafali (78 off 34 balls) was at her destructive best and joined forces with an equally belligerent Sehrawat (74* off 49 deliveries) before Richa Ghosh smacked a 29-ball 49 to help India post an imposing 219 for three.
Samaira Dharnidharka was the pick of all the UAE bowlers as he picked up a wicket and only conceded 33 runs in her quota of four overs. Apart from her all the other bowlers were highly ineffective and failed to keep the India batters in check.
It was always going to be a daunting task for the UAE batters to chase the daunting target down and that's what it eventually turned out to be. Barring their captain Satish (16 runs) her fellow opener Lavanya Kenny (24) and Mahika Gaur (26) none of the other UAE batters could show any resistance against a disciplined Indian bowling attack.
The Indian bowlers restricted UAE to 97/5 and the result clearly displayed the gulf between the two sides. The score put up by India batting first is also the highest score in the tournament till now. Shafali Verma with her brilliant knock in the match became the second-highest scorer for India in major ICC events as captain.
