On this very day in the year 2014, the cricketing world lost Phil Hughes in the most unfortunate of manners. The left-hander died at the St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney after being hit in the neck by a Sean Abbott bouncer in a Sheffield Shield match on 25th November.

The stylish southpaw was batting on 63 when he attempted a hook shot to a bouncer from New South Wales bowler Sean Abbott. Though Hughes was wearing a helmet, the ball hit him in the unprotected area just under the ear. He collapsed to the ground before receiving mouth to mouth resuscitation. He was directly taken to the hospital where he underwent a surgery and went into induced coma. The injury suffered by Hughes was rare as far as sport related injuries are concerned.

The match was stopped immediately and all the remaining matches were abandoned. The series against India was postponed by five days as the Australian cricketers were not in any sort of a position to play a match.

Following the unfortunate incident, calls were made for improvement to the batting helmets. Additional guards were fitted to the rare of the helmet so that it doesn’t allow any portion of the head to be unprotected. An inquest was carried out from 10th October which led to the conclusion that Hughes died from his own minuscule misjudgement and no umpires or fellow players were responsible for the death.

Hughes who was a very talented batsman remains the one and only player in the history of the game to score two centuries on his Test debut. He will be forever missed and will remain not out in each and every cricket lover’s heart.

On his 2nd death anniversary, the cricketing fraternity remembered Hughes and expressed their grief through social media. Here are some of the best reactions:

2. Matthew Wade

3. David Warner

4. Usman Khawaja

5. Peter Siddle
