Twitter Reactions: Devon Conway and Will Young stage a comeback for New Zealand against England's decorated seam attack
New Zealand didn’t disappoint the fans as they managed to give the hosts a run for their money.
Devon Conway seems to be on a roll in the ongoing second Test of the two-match series between New Zealand and England at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. Conway continued his fine form from the first Test as he racked up another half-century. Meanwhile, it was Will Young who stole all the thunder and managed to cause a buzz in the cricket fraternity.
Starting Day 2 at 258 for seven, England quickly lost their rest three wickets to invite the visitors to bat. Meanwhile, owing to a fine batting display by Daniel Lawrence and Mark Wood, the Three Lions managed to touch the figure of 300. While Lawrence remained not out at 81, Wood posted 41 runs on the scoreboard.
As New Zealand scalped the last wicket of James Anderson to stop England at 303, it was a special moment for pacer Trent Boult as he touched the illustrious figure of 500 wickets in the international circuit. Boult became the fourth Blackcaps player to do so. Not much was expected from the Kiwis as they are playing a relatively inexperienced batting side in the Test match.
Devon Conway and Will Young to the rescue
However, the visitors didn’t disappoint the fans as they managed to give the hosts a run for their money. The Blackcaps didn’t get off to a good start as they lost their opening batter and stand-in captain Tom Latham at a disappointing score of 6. However, the visitors didn’t have anything to complain about as Devon Conway and Will Young entertained the viewers by presenting a class show with the willow.
Looking at the way Conway and Young built their partnership to bail New Zealand out of the crunch situation, no one could say that both the players are featuring in their second Test match. The two scripted a 122-run partnership and brought the visitors in a commanding position.
England finally managed to get the much-needed breakthrough as Stuart Broad picked his second wicket of the day by sending Conway back. The 29-year-old marched to the pavilion after scoring 80 runs. Despite scalping an important wicket, the hosts failed to pick the momentum.
Kiwis continued their assault on the bowlers as this time, Young, who was added as a replacement for Kane Williamson, got in a partnership with the veteran Ross Taylor. Though Will lost his wicket on the last ball of the Day after scoring 82 runs, it won’t be wrong to say that New Zealand truly ruled Day 2 of the second Test. With Taylor not out on 46, the Kiwis are reeling at 229 for three and trail by just 74 runs.
