Twitter Reactions: England continue to dominate the proceedings; favourites to seal the series
West Indies ended Day 3 at 10/2 in pursuit of 399.
If you thought that Day 2 was as bad as it could’ve got for the West Indies, Day 3 has proven you wrong. England, who were 10/0 at lunch, went on to get a massive total of 226 for the loss of two wickets in only 58 overs. They played at a great run rate, which once again shows how ineffective the visitors’ bowling was.
With all the batsmen from the top three getting a fifty-plus score, the hosts declared when they lost their second wicket. Rory Burns made a brilliant 90 in just 163 balls. He missed out on his hundred by only ten runs to score quick runs for his team. Dominic Sibley made an excellent 56, and together the two combined for an opening stand of 114.
Jason Holder got Sibley lbw in the 41st over of the English innings. This led to the England captain, Joe Root walking out to the middle. He played a knock, which many don’t associate with his game. Root went on to score a 56-ball 68, which consisted of eight fours and a six. Once Burns lost his wicket England decided to declare their second innings with a lead of 398 runs.
Stuart Broad proves his worth once again
After not being picked for the first Test, Stuart Broad has made a strong comeback and showed the world why he still deserves a place in the team. With the Caribbean side needing 399 runs to win, the English bowler got a couple of wickets. To top that up, Broad had got six wickets in the first innings. He is just one short of 500 Test wickets and will hope to reach this mark on Day 4.
West Indies, who began the day at 137/6, were bundled up for just 197. Broad got six wickets, Anderson two, while Woakes and Archer chipped in with one apiece. With eight wickets already in this match, the 34-year-old could be looking for a ten-wicket haul.
At the end of Day 3, the West Indies were at 10/2, needing 389 runs more, while England are eight wickets away from winning the Test and the series. Well, it seems like an impossible situation for the visitors, but Test cricket is known as the format where the unexpected happens. It would be a day to watch if the Jason Holder-led side can pull off a comeback.
However, with the way the first three days have played out, England is heading to a 2-1 series win after losing the first Test.
