Joe Root finished things in style with a six as England went on to win the game by 9 wickets.
In what was a clinical run chase by England, the Poms ended the series in style as they won the 5th ODI by 9 wickets. The Southampton crowd witnessed some splendid cricketing action as the Windies failed to win a single game in the One Day International series.
Earlier in the day, it was home skipper Eoin Morgan who won the toss and elected to field first. They made one change as Tom Curran was brought in place of Chris Woakes. As for the Windies, Kyle Hope replaced the injured Evin Lewis while Sunil Ambris was also brought into the playing XI.
Batting first, Windies were off to a scintillating start. Chris Gayle made it for his slow start by hitting three consecutive sixes. He scored quickfire runs 40 (29) before getting out. While Kyle Hope also didn’t do much, it was the other Hope who rose to the occasion.
Shai Hope scored a magnificent 72 runs as he batted really well. Marlon Samuels scored 32 runs before he was stumped by Jos Buttler. Sunil Ambris and Ashley Nurse’ late charge helped them take Windies total to a competitive 288/6 in their quota of 50 overs. Sunil scored 38 (27)* while Ashley Nurse scored 31 (12)*.
Liam Plunkett got a couple of wickets. Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid managed to get a wicket each. Tom Curran got the priceless wicket of Gayle who was just starting to look threatening. Jake Ball also got a wicket but he was really expensive, conceding 94 runs in his 10 overs.
England’s approach to the run chase was outstanding. They displayed pure dominance over the Windies bowlers. Jason Roy scored a stellar 96 runs from 70 balls. He missed out on a hundred as he was trapped in front of the stumps by Miguel Cummins. Turned out that was the only wicket Windies could manage.
Bairstow took over and provided the crowd, a display of some stupendous batting all over. Scoring a brilliant 141 runs not out from just 114 balls, Bairstow hit 17 boundaries in his knock. Joe Root finished things in style with a six as England went on to win the game by 9 wickets.
