Team India is in the driver’s seat in the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston. Rain dominated the proceedings allowing only around 38 overs in the entire day but it was filled with a lot of action in which a world record was also broken. Jasprit Bumrah was in the thick of the things with bat and ball, smashing Stuart Broad for 35 runs in an over and then picking up three wickets. England’s backs are to the walls at the moment and the first session of the third day will be crucial for them.
The day started with the visitors at 338/7 and the play resumed the same way it ended. Runs started to come at a brisk pace with Mohammed Shami opening up his arms. Ravindra Jadeja also did the same and also saw luck going his way on 92 when Zak Crawley. The let-off helped him get to his first overseas ton in Tests with a brilliant backfoot cut shot. The 48-run partnership was broken by none other than James Anderson as Shami was holed out at the deep third-man area.
Jadeja too went for a slog after getting to the three-figure mark only to see Anderson breach his defence. However, the highlighting moment of the day was yet to arrive. At 375/9, England would’ve hoped to restrict India around 380. But skipper Jasprit Bumrah had different ideas. He took on Stuart Broad in the latter’s 18th over of the day and created a world record. Bumrah took apart Broad in a crazy over that had wides and no-ball galore and ended up smashing 29 runs with the bat.
The extras helped the tally in the over to 35 making it the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket surpassing Robin Peterson who conceded 28 runs in his over off Brian Lara. The sensational onslaught from Bumrah took India past 400 as well. The visitors were eventually dismissed for 416 runs in their first innings with Anderson picking up a brilliant five-wicket haul.
Frequent rain breaks frustrate both teams
Once India’s innings ended, rain began to make an appearance and that left England batters frustrated. However, India managed to keep picking wickets in every passage of play with captain Bumrah leading the way. He first nipped out Alex Less with a delivery that straightened to breach his defence. He then induced false strokes from Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope dangling the carrot outside the off-stump. Both the batters fell for the trap going for booming drives and ended up edging to the slip fielder.
At 44/3, England saw two of their best batsmen from the previous series, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, join hands. The duo on both sides of rain break did well to weather the pace bowling challenge posed by the opposition. But the former England skipper gloved one to the wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant, in the last hour off Mohammed Siraj. Mohammed Shami then was finally rewarded for some potent as he sent back nightwatchman Jack Leach.
Bairstow and Ben Stokes then saw off a tricky period as England ended the day on 84/5, 332 runs away from India’s score in the first innings. The morning session of the third day will be massively important for the hosts if they are to make a comeback in the Test match.

As frustrating as the rain is,it just gives an opportunity for Bumrah to rest up and come back in for another spell. Might be his 3rd today but with ample rest! Not so good news for the hosts. #INDvsENG

Even with the form Jonny bairstow is in,i really hope India go full and straight at him early. This back of length might not work. Let's see. #INDvsENG

India has amazing benchstrength and there is virtually a back up for everyone in the playing 11, but the stars of this test match so far- Pant, Bumrah and Jaddu ,on current form these three are the ones who are absolutely indispensable for Team India.
