When Mehidy Hasan Miraz reduced the West Indies to 59 for three, few would have expected the West Indies to make a comeback in the Chattogram Test. In the first four days, Bangladesh had the upper hand at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. But the Tigers were left shell-shocked by a man, named Kyle Mayers, who helped the visitors chase down 395 and win by four wickets.

Bonner and Mayers make hay

When the first day started, the Caribbean team needed 285 runs with seven wickets in hand. Kyle Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner had already gotten their eyes in, putting on 51 runs by the close of the fourth day. But it went without saying they had to carry on with their good work right from the word go. The Tigers would have felt on the front foot after dominating the visitors for the most part.

But on the last day, the hosts had to wait for as many as two sessions to get their fourth wicket. Bonner and Mayers went on to put on 216 runs for the fourth wicket. Both of them complimented each other. Even as Bonner put his head down and staved off the Bangladesh bowling attack, Mayers kept the scoreboard ticking. Taijul Islam gave the Tigers relief getting rid of the right-handed Bonner.

Mayers crushes Bangladesh

Bonner scored 86 runs off 245 balls with the help of 10 fours and one six. Jermaine Blackwood started his knock with a six, but then he perished to Nayeem Hasan. He tried to go downtown only to see his stumps go for a walk. But Mayers carried on in his own merry way. The left-hander joined hands with Joshua Da Silva and stitched together a partnership of 100 runs for the sixth wicket.

He was seeing the ball like a football, scoring his maiden Test ton off 178 balls. He took the onus on himself to guide the West Indies through. And he did his job with precision. The southpaw notched a double ton off 303 balls and stayed unbeaten. His knock was laced with 20 fours and seven massive sixes. Bangladesh could feel hard done by as they didn’t have the services of Shakib Al Hasan.
