Twitter Reactions: Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Najmul Hossain Shanto keep New Zealand at bay in series opener
Shoriful Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up three wickets apiece for the Tigers.

The second day of the opening Test belonged to Bangladesh, though they are yet to take full command. After making a comeback in the last session of the first day’s play, the Tigers turned the screws on New Zealand to some extent at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The Black Caps, on the other hand, aren’t in grave danger, but need to be on their toes going forward in the game.
Mehidy Hasan churns out late blows
The hosts could only survive 20.4 overs in the first session of the second day’s play where they scored 70 runs. Henry Nicholls, one of their overnight batters, notched a gutsy half-century off 97 balls. He was last man to be dismissed in the Kiwis innings after he made 75 runs with the help of 12 fours. The lower order couldn’t contribute much as New Zealand folded for 328 in 108.1 overs.
After picking two wickets on day one, Shoriful Islam added to his wickets’ tally, getting rid of Rachin Ravindra. Mehidy Hasan Miraz toiled hard in the first day and he reaped the rewards in the second, dismissing Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner in quick succession. Skipper Mominul Haque picked up two wickets as well. Taskin Ahmed bowled his heart out, but failed to get a wicket.
Shanto, Joy make hay
Bangladesh made a steady start as Shadman Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy put on 43 runs for the opening wicket. However, Islam perished after giving Neil Wagner a simple caught and bowled. Thereafter, Joy and Najmul Hossain Shanto made sure that the Tigers don’t fall apart. The duo stitched together a crucial 104-run partnership for the second wicket and made the Kiwis sweat.
After scoring 64 with seven fours and a six, Shanto fell prey to Wagner, who picked up his second wicket. Joy was the more circumspect of the two as he stayed unbeaten on 70 off 211 balls with seven fours. Along with him is captain Mominul, who played out 27 balls without throwing his wicket away. Bangladesh are still trailing by 153 runs with eight wickets left in their first innings.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to the day’s play
Doesn't guarantee any outcome, but that was a really solid couple of Test cricket days for Bangladesh👏👏. New Zealand will come back harder on day 3 though. Nice battle.

The 104-run partnership between Najmul Shanto and Mominul Haque is Bangladesh's first-ever 2nd wicket century stand in Tests against New Zealand.

At last a day of domination over NZ by the Tigers. A rarity indeed.
Record going into this series was NZ W12 D 3
Best display in the Red ball form I have seen from the Tigers in 2-3 years.
Pitch should be good for batting tomorrow.1st innings lead? @BCBtigers#WTC23— Farong (@thundhaa) January 2, 2022
