South Africa posted their fourth consecutive victory on the trot in the 2022 Women’s World Cup, by beating the New Zealand side by two wickets. Chasing a target of 229 for a win, the Proteas went past the finish line with three balls to spare.

Opener Laura Wolvaardt played a superb knock for her side at the top of the order. The right-hander scored a sedate 94-ball 67 for her side and laid the platform for the chase. Apart from Wolvaardt, skipper Sune Luus also scored a vital half-century as well.

In fact, it was the 88-run partnership between Wolvdaart and Luus that created panic in the New Zealand camp. Even though South Africa experienced a few jitters in the end, Marizanne Kapp kept her cool and helped the Proteas clinch a cliffhanger, scoring a crucial 34*.

For the Kiwis, Amelia Kerr was the pick of the bowlers. The right-arm spinner scalped three wickets in her 10-over spell and leaked 50 runs. Apart from Kerr, Frances Mackay chipped in with a couple of scalps as well.

Skipper Sophie Devine helps New Zealand post 228 on the board

After wielding the willow first, New Zealand lost their first wicket with just six runs on the board, as Shabnim Ismail dismissed Suzie Bates. But then, the experienced duo of Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr came together and put on a superb partnership of 81 runs for the second wicket to steady the Kiwi ship.

Kerr scored a sedate 58-ball 42 for her side. Even though Kerr and Amy Satterthwaite were dismissed in quick succession, Maddy Green stepped up for her side and forged a stand of 80 runs for the fourth wicket with Devine.

Devine was the catalyst that held the Black Caps’ innings together, scored a superb 93 for her side, and helped them to a total of 228. For South Africa, Ayabonga Khaka and Shabnim Ismail were the pick of the bowlers.  Both these bowlers scalped three wickets each to peg back the Kiwi batting lineup.
