Twitter Reactions: MS Dhoni all set to find his way back to CSK
Franchises will be now able to retain up to 5 players via a combination of pre-auction retention and Right to Match (RTM) cards.
Fans can finally breathe easy as MS Dhoni is all set to don the yellow jersey for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) once again. The dispute regarding the player retention policy was resolved after long deliberation at the tournament’s governing council meeting on December 6 (Wednesday). Franchises will be now able to retain up to 5 players via a combination of pre-auction retention and Right to Match (RTM) cards.
Up till now, there had been sufficient ambiguity regarding the retention pool for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) franchises. Since they will be making a comeback into the tournament after a two year-long hiatus, the player pool being offered to them for retention had been under the scanner. Reportedly, one particular franchise had also objected to the entire scheme of retaining players, adding to the indecision.
MS Dhoni to play for Chennai Super Kings after two long years
According to the decision taken in the governing council meeting, an IPL franchise will be eligible to retain up to 5 players via a combination of Player Retention (Pre-auction) and Right to Match (RTM) Card (During auction), with the conditions that a maximum of either 3 retention or 3 RTMs can be made, subject to the franchises’ discretion. Also, even if no pre-auction retention is made by a franchise, they’ll be eligible for up to 3 RTMs.
Further, for the returning franchises, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, the player retention pool would consist of the players who’d been a part of these two respective franchises in the 2015 edition of the tournament and had subsequently played for Rising Pune Supergiants or Gujarat Lions. Since Dhoni satisfies the condition, he’ll be eligible for being retained by the CSK franchise. This news is bound to bring abundant elation to the CSK fans, who’ve waited patiently for two years to see their beloved franchise take the field, and their favourite MSD to don the yellow jersey once again.
