Nepal’s journey as an Associate nation to earning One-Day International status is an inspiring one – the Asian team made its debut against the Netherlands in the first match of the series on August 1. They lost the match by 55 runs but made an amazing comeback in the following ODI to register their maiden win in the format. It was once again a low scoring game and Nepal managed to steal a win with the smallest possible margin.
Nepalese skipper Paras Khadka won the toss and decided to bat first. The openers Malla and Khakurel had some sort of a start but couldn’t convert it beyond 13 and 19 respectively, no.3 AK Sah failed to score more than four runs and they were under some pressure now. That’s when the skipper stepped in and stabilized the innings with a partnership he shared alongside DS Airee.
Khadka scored a half century while Airee contributed 19, there was another half centurion in the lower order Sompal Kami who was also the highest contributor in the game with his 46-ball 61. For the Netherlands FJ Klaassen was the pick of the bowlers with his three-wicket haul. Having bowled Nepal out for 216, the Netherlands would’ve been confident.
In the chase, Kami after his brilliant batting effort dealt them the first blow on the second ball of the innings dismissing SJ Myburgh for a duck. CJ ter Braak’s 39 and W Barresi’s slow half century kept them afloat. They lost a cluster of wickets in the middle order and almost lost confidence and that’s when they lost Barresi for 71 in 89 balls.
They still had a target to chase and that’s when the Netherlands team looked up to the lower-order. Skipper PM Seelaar’s 21 and odd 10s from S Snater, Klaassen and Meekeren kept them in the hunt but on the final ball when they needed 2 runs to win, Khadka dismissed Klaassen to seal a dramatic one-wicket win for his team.
