Twitter Reactions on Maverick Martin Gorgeous Guptil’s fantastic Double Hundred: The 4th and the last quarter finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 is under way in New Zealand. Before most of us on the Western part of the world got up and realized what was happening, New Zealand’s Maverick opener Martin Guptil was batting well beyond the hundred runs mark. He took the disdain West Indies bowling apart and dispatched every bowler and ball that he faced to all the parts of the miniature ground.
Guptill scored 237 runs not out from 163 balls, his fabulous innings was studded with 24 beautiful boundaries and 11 sixes which could have made their way out of the park even on the biggest of the stadiums. Yes the Windies bowlers bowled badly but it was more about how superbly Guptill batted.
Right from the start of the knock he knew what he was doing and had the intentions clear. Gradually he crossed the hundred, one fifty run mark and then there was the personal best of 189, which he crossed over around the 43rd over. Everyone could sense tempo for the double hundred building on, for the way he was timing his shots and dispatching each and every ball that was darted at him.
Martin Guptil reached his double hundred the first by a New Zealander, first in New Zealand; second by a non-Indian batsman and 6th overall double century that has been scored in ODI cricket. His 237* is now the highest individual score in World Cup cricket, the second highest individual ODI score and the total New Zealand posted is the highest that has been scored in a world cup knock-out match.
The way Gup was batting, with around 5 overs to go from the point he scored his second hundred in the innings; we could sense him getting closer to the Rohit Sharma’s 264 runs record.
By the time the innings ended he was playing on 237* and New Zealand had set the West Indies a huge total of 294 to chase in their innings. Unless Chris Gayle or someone from the West Indies beats Guptil’s innings with merit it is presumable that New Zealand will make their way into the semi finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 with a win today.
Here are the best reactions Guptil’s knock generated on Twitter.
