West Indies have gone through a lot of adversity in the last decade. Coming into the Test series against Bangladesh, they slumped to a 0-3 clean-sweep as well. However, they rose like a phoenix from the ashes and registered a 2-0 whitewash over the Tigers. Kraigg Brathwaite and Co won the second Test by 17 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur to seal the deal.

Taijul Islam stands out for Bangladesh

The fact that West Indies had a substantial lead going into the fourth day made them firm favourites. Nkrumah Bonner and night-watchman Jomel Warrican played through until the end of the third day. But the Tigers gained the upper hand, picking up three wickets in the first session and conceding only 57 runs. Abu Jayed Rahi drew first blood, getting of Warrican after which he got Kyle Mayers.

Taijul Islam got Jermaine Blackwood stumped and from out of the blues, Bangladesh got a foothold back in the contest, big time. Joshua Da Silva tried to put his head down, scoring 20 runs, but he fell prey to Taijul. At the other end, Bonner showed a great amount of resilience. However, he wasn’t getting support from the other end. He was the ninth wicket to fall as he perished to Nayeem Hasan.

Kraigg Brathwaite and Co march ahead

The Tigers bowled the West Indies out for 117 runs in their second innings. Taijul, who picked four wickets in the first innings, picked up four in the second instance as well. Chasing 231, the hosts came out firing on all cylinders. Even as Soumya Sarkar was subdued, Tamim Iqbal played his shots. The duo put on 59 runs for the opening wicket after which Kraigg Brathwaite got rid of Sarkar.

Tamim scored a fifty, but he became Brathwaite’s second victim. From there onwards, the Tigers’ innings stuttered. All of their middle-order batsmen got into double figures, but no one could carry on. Mominul Haque and Liton Das got into their 20s and perished. In the end, it all came down to Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

The Tigers pinned hopes on him to see them over the finishing line. He played some big shots, scored 31 runs with three fours and two sixes, but failed to save a series whitewash for Bangladesh. Cornwall was the star performer as he got four wickets. Warrican and Brathwaite got three wickets each.
