India have made a mockery of the 323-run chase in the first ODI of the five-match series against the Windies and have taken a 1-0 lead. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma blew away the visitors with their authoritative centuries as the Men in Blue cantered to victory by eight wickets with more than seven overs to spare. For the Caribbean side, it was only Shimron Hetmyer who batted exceptionally well and helped them notch up their fifth 300+ total against India.

After losing the toss, Windies lost their debutant opener Hemraj Chanderpaul early as Mohammed Shami castled him. But the other opener Kieran Powell kept on scoring some quick runs while playing some delightful strokes. His batting kept things smooth for them while Shai Hope was also looking good. However, soon after getting to his half-century the left-hander was sent back by the rookie Khaleel Ahmed.

Hetmyer came to the crease then and bludgeoned the ball to all the parts of the stadium. He didn’t spare any Indian bowler and scored the third century of his career. Though Windies needed him to play more as the wickets kept falling and they were eight down in the 43rd over of the innings. Devendra Bishoo and Kemar Roach then added 44 crucial runs to the total and helped them get to 322 runs after 50 overs.

Walk in the park

How many 300+ chases have been a walk in the park? This one was certainly amongst them as Rohit Sharma and Kohli just nonchalantly brushed aside every Caribbean bowler to notch up their respective centuries. Shikhar Dhawan missed out today thanks to the debutant Oshane Thomas who castled him. But India’s top three is so strong that there was no respite for the visitors.

Both of them added 246 runs in just 32 overs together and literally toyed with the bowling. At the halfway stage, it seemed like that Jason Holder and his troops were just going through the motions. Such was the class of the two batsmen that they showed the world why they are at the top of the ICC rankings in the 50-overs format.

Kohli changed his gear even more after reaching his century and was eventually dismissed for 140 runs. Rohit Sharma, however, didn’t let the opportunity and finished yet another game in the chase with a resounding 152* fittingly hitting the winning shot as well.
