Twitter Reactions: Rohit Sharma grafts his way to sixth Test ton in Ranchi
He got to the milestone with a colossal six off Dane Piedt.
Prior to the Test series versus South Africa, Rohit Sharma was in with a make-or-break situation in his career in the longest format. The Mumbai batsman has been playing white-ball cricket at the highest level since December 2013, yet hasn’t been able to cement his spot. The same is due to the inconsistent shows, especially in conditions, which aren’t quite favourable for batting.
However, his career got a lease of life when he was asked to open the batting versus the Proteas. It’s something he didn’t do in the format before the fixtures, though he is a regular opener in white-ball cricket. The third Test of the series at the JSCA International Complex Ground in currently underway and Rohit is already the leading run-scorer. In fact, he notched his sixth Test century.
Rohit sizzles yet another time
Rohit started the series with twin centuries in Pune, but couldn’t repeat the same at the MCA Stadium in Pune. However, he didn’t allow the odd failure to unnerve him and carted the bowlers in the first innings of the ongoing Test. After India won the toss and elected to bat, it wasn’t easy for him. He saw Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara falling prey to pacer Kagiso Rabada.
Then he lost Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, to Anrich Nortje. Rohit had a massive task at hand and he passed with flying colours. He got to his half-century off 86 balls while staging India’s comeback along with Ajinkya Rahane. Then the 32-year-old started pressing the accelerator and scored his next set of 50 runs in only 44 balls. Rohit brought up the milestone off a mere 130 deliveries.
And he reached there with an audacious six over the wide long-off region off spinner Dane Piedt. He also became the second Indian opener to score three or more centuries in a Test series. Rohit got apt support from Rahane, who was on 60 when Rohit scored the ton. Rohit’s knock was carved with 13 fours and four sixes. In the meantime, Twitterati couldn’t stop lauding Rohit on the masterclass.
