Twitter Reactions: Rohit Sharma lights up Chinnaswamy yet again with his 29th ODI century
In Dhawan's absence, Rohit Sharma batted responsibly to notch up his 8th ton against Australia in ODIs.
Rohit Sharma has continued his love affair with the Chinnaswamy Stadium and Australia. In a crucial chase, the Indian opener has managed to slam his 29th ODI century, 8th against the Men in Yellow, as the pressure continues to mount on the visitors. India, chasing 287 in the decider, are in the driver’s seat at the moment with Rohit going all guns blazing.
Earlier, Steve Smith scored a majestic century against to propel Australia to 286 in 50 overs and India needed a big knock from one of their top three. To make things worse, Shikhar Dhawan got ruled out of the action having injured his shoulder while fielding in the fifth over of the innings. Rohit had to open with KL Rahul and looked in sublime touch from the word go even as his partner took time at the other end.
The 32-year-old was timing the ball sweetly early in the innings itself and played a couple of brilliant pick up shots which rung the bell for Australia. He first got India off to a good start along with Rahul as the duo added 69 runs before the latter was pinned in front of the stumps by Ashton Agar.
Rohit Sharma adapted well
Rohit Sharma, however, had to adapt to the situation as the pitch became slow with the spinners coming into the attack. The run-scoring went down but he, along with, Virat Kohli didn’t lose their cool and kept rotating the strike. Rohit patiently played every ball at its merit and made sure that the game didn’t go away from India.
With Dhawan not there, he had to bat responsibly and this is what he did. He took special care of Mitchell Starc who dished out some wide deliveries and played a few eye-catching strokes off Cummins as well. He was also severe on anything short and always made sure that the ball went into the stands with minimum efforts.
The going got easy once the spinners bowled a few overs in tandem and Australia, not getting a wicket, started to panic. This is where Rohit Sharma took over and upped the ante. Eventually, in the 30th over bowled by Josh Hazlewood, he got to his first three-figure mark in 2020. However, the Indian vice-captain hardly celebrated the feat with his eyes set on a bigger prize.
It would be safe to say now that the new year has began on a good note for Rohit Sharma and will be looking to make the most of his form.
