Twitter Reactions: Third umpire's 'rushed decision' on the final ball gives Hurricanes a one-run win over Heat
Despite the series of setbacks, the Heat managed to come as close as 7 needed from the last over before some spectacular defending-work from Boland brought it down to 2 from the last ball.

An incredible spell from the Afghanistan mystery spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman in a dramatic clash restricted the Hobart Hurricanes to a sub-par total against Brisbane Heat in the 20th encounter of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2020-21 at Gabba, Brisbane. After being put in to bat, the Hurricanes started awfully as Xavier Bartlett struck on the second ball of the game to dismiss opener D’Arcy Short for a duck. The other opener Ben McDermott struggled during his 8-ball outing too and perished to Mujeeb ur Rahman as he failed to connect a delivery that stayed slightly low and disturbed his stumps.
A sedate 37-run stand for the third wicket between Dawid Malan and Peter Handscomb provided some respite, however, the Hurricanes’ search for momentum continued as Heat’s ensured to give them nothing to capitalize upon. Much to Hurricane’s respite, Malan was given life at 17, when Sam Heazlett failed to hold on to a catch. However, the drop did not prove too costly as Mujeeb struck in the 12th over to get rid of Malan (39 from 32), soon after Jack Wildermuth had cleaned up Peter Handscomb to end the third-wicket stand.
David-Ingram drag Hurricanes to 150
Lewis Gregory would have had his man had Wildermuth been able to grab a dolly in the 13th over when Colin Ingram drove it straight to him at short third man. Riding on his luck after being given a chance, Ingram played with some intent alongside Tim David, giving his team the much-needed acceleration. The duo slammed Wildermuth for 15 runs in the 15th over, and just when their 42-run alliance, which came in 26 balls, started to look threatening, Mark Steketee brought Ingram’s luck-filled 24-run outing to an end, getting him caught by Bartlett close to the ropes in the deep.
Bashing quickly from the other end, Tim David fell in 18th over to Bartlett, while he was trying to flick a yorker behind the wickets, only to be knocked over. His 36 from 17, featuring a couple of fours and three sixes, however, proved crucial in taking his team to 150. The 19th over turned out to be a magical one for Mujeeb, who nearly bowled a triple-wicket maiden, dismissing Keemo Paul, Wil Parker, and Scott Boland in a space of four balls.
Heat’s rollercoaster ride
Coming to chase a below-par total, the top-order of Heat committed hara-kiri as they were reduced to 8 for 3. While Sam Heazlett edged one off Riley Meredith to McDermott behind the wickets, to fall for a duck, his partner – Jack Wildermuth – followed suit as he fell for a four-ball duck to Scott Boland. Meredith’s express quick yorker soon undid Tom Cooper’s (1 from 3) stump to reduce the Heat to three-down in the third over.
Max Bryant, who stood unsupported at his end witnessing a collapse, finally found some support from Lewis Gregory, who added 52 in 38 deliveries for the fourth-wicket partnership alongside him. However, the stand was broken by Keemo Paul, whose slightly wide delivery was deposited by Bryant (32 from 21) into the hands of Ingram, who took a brilliant catch running towards hid left.
It was James Bazley’s inspirational knock that featured four boundaries and a couple of sixes that kept his team in the hunt. Bazley added 50 from 31 for the 6th wicket with skipper James Peirson (14), and he was well-assisted by Mark Steketee after Heat lost Pierson and Simon Milenko. Despite the series of setbacks, the Heat managed to come as close as 7 needed from the last over before some spectacular defending-work from Boland brought it down to 2 from the last ball. While taking a single on the final delivery, Ingram ran Stekette out as Hurricanes won by a solitary run.

They will spend 5 minutes checking whether a fielder stopped a 4 or not, yet one look at that decision and lets all get down the pub… #BBL10

You couldn't have dreamt a closer finish. A centimetre or two of air between the bat and ground decides the match.

How is that decided so quickly on a game deciding call…
Personally i think it was the wrong call. And go for neither team. What bugs me is how quickly it was called. When irrelevant things get reviewed for minutes. The call to end the game ends in a flash…#BBL10

Surely the bat was grounded over the line and then bounced up? Looks like a poor decision… again #BBL10

It was a rushed decision without a definitive replay. @FoxCricket didn’t make any effort to examine the decision either & just wanted to move on.
