Twitter Reactions: Twitter comes hard at the umpire after a poor stumping decision
Umpiring standard right through the Asia Cup T20 has been under the scanner since a lot of decisions have gone against general opinion. In the India v Sri Lanka game, when the Sri Lankan team was already down and submissive against the strong Indian bowling attack, the umpire made quite a blunder. Towards the end of the inning, though, Sri Lankan batsmen bounced back and managed to get a few runs on the board. This one particular stumping decision off Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling looked a really dodgy call.
Ashwin saw Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera advancing down the wicket and bowled it a lot slower and too wide outside off. It was wide enough to be called a wide ball. Perera came down but failed to connect despite a big heave. He probably selected the wrong shot for that ball. MS Dhoni who is always quick behind the wickets whipped off the bails in one motion and looked really confident with his appeal. And usually, when Dhoni is confident it is out. The square-leg umpire decided to go by instinct and raised his finger. He thought it was too obvious to forward it to the TV umpire.
But as it turned out, replays confirmed that Perera had rather got his bat back inside the crease in time and that would have been a touch and go decision even for the third umpire. A few different angles and one could easily say it was not out while the umpire seemed to be absolutely certain he hadn’t returned back.
