Twitter Reactions: West Indies continue to fight on an eventful day at the Basin Reserve
The batting trio of the visitors were appreciated for some good innings at the top.
With New Zealand starting from 447/9, not many expected them to stay afloat long enough. However, no.11 batsman Trent Boult probably played the innings of his life, battling out 60 balls, all for debutant Tom Blundell to reach his maiden century.
The wicketkeeper batsman stayed not out on 107 and was the top scorer. The Kiwis eventually declared at 520/9 with a mammoth lead of 386 runs. New Zealand had an unbeaten partnership of 78 runs for the last wicket.
Kemar Roach was the pick amongst the bowlers with three wickets while Miguel Cummins also got a couple of wickets. Roston Chase got two wickets as well including the dismissal of Grandhomme. Skipper Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel got a wicket each.
In reply, the West Indies were quite contrary to their first innings. Openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell combined for a 72 run stand. Powell fell short of his half century as he was dismissed for 40. Matt Henry got the first breakthrough as he had him caught and bowled.
Coming out at No.3, Shimron Hetmyer scored a splendid 66. He and Brathwaite put up 94 runs for the second wicket partnership. While Hetmyer got out, Brathwaite continued to bat till the end of the day. Both him and Shai Hope were not out as West Indies were 214/2 at stumps on Day 3.
Brathwaite was not out on 79 as he closed on to his seventh test hundred. Matt Henry accounted for the both the wickets that fell in the Day. While New Zealand still have the upper edge with the Windies trailing by 172 runs, it was good to see the visitors providing some sort of a fightback.
Twitter was all praise for Tom Blundell and Trent Boult’s last wicket partnership. There was also some criticism for the way Windies bowled in the morning session. The batting trio of the visitors were appreciated for some good innings at the top.
