In a nail biter, West Indies managed to come up on the top of England beating them by a bare margin of seven runs. The seventh match of the ongoing Women’s World Cup 2022 was played at the University Oval in Dunedin. Winning the toss, West Indies skipper Stafanie Taylor opted to bat first.

In overcast conditions, England’s pacers managed to get some swing and should have clinched a wicket on the first ball when Deandra Dottin’s leading edge was put down by Lauren Winfield-Hill at mid-on. After that, both Dottin and her opening partner Hayley Mathews played more cautiously and stitched an opening partnership of 81 runs till the 20th over. However, England came back stunningly in the match scalping four wickets while giving away only 17 runs in next six overs.

Batters Shemaine Campbelle and Chedean Nation rescued West Indies

After being reduced for 98/4, wicketkeeper-batter Shemaine Campbelle and Chedean Nation stitched a partnership of 123 runs for the fifth wicket. As a result, West Indies managed to put a total of 225/6 in their allotted 50 overs. The total was also their second highest against England in 50-over format.

In reply, England had a steady start in their chase with both the openers playing till the eight over before opener Lauren Winfield was caught by Dottin taking a spectacular catch while fielding at point. Three Lions middle-order comprising of skipper Heather Knight, Natalie Sciver and Amy Ellen Jones departed cheaply as the batting side was now reduced to just 94/5 at half-way stage of their innings.

All-rounders Danielle Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley then kept the score board ticking, milking single and doubles while stroking boundaries in between as well. However, both Dunkley and Wyatt were fell in a space of three balls leaving England at 154/7. Bowling all-rounder Katherine Brunt also followed the suit getting out in the same over as Wyatt.

The onus was now on the bowlers with Sophie Ecclestone and Kate Cross involved in a 61-run partnership taking their side from 156 for eight to 217/8. However in a heart break for England, Cross was caught short from her ground by Anisa Mohammed. Three balls later, Anya Shrubsole was bowled by Mohammed at it was curtains down for the England handing victory to West Indies by seven runs.
