Twitter Reactions: West Indies march their way to the semi-finals
West Indies and South Africa met at Nagpur in a crucial Group 1 encounter. Darren Sammy won the toss as the West Indian captain opted to bowl first. South Africa left Kyle Abbott for Aaron Phangiso while Rilee Rossouw came in for the injured JP Duminy.
South Africa lost Hashim Amla in the first over as he was run out by Andre Russell. They were reduced to 47/5 in 8.2 overs with half of the side including AB de Villiers back to the pavilion. Interestingly, Chris Gayle shone with the ball picking up 2 wickets.
Quinton de Kock played the lone hand scoring 47 off 45 balls along with David Wiese who went on to score 28 runs from 25 balls. South Africa could only manage 122 runs at the loss of 8 wickets by the end of 20 overs. Dwayne Bravo and Russell also took 2 wickets apiece.
West Indies lost Gayle in the first over who failed to show his magic with the bat as he was undone by Kagiso Rabada. Johnson Charles 32 (35) then guided West Indies from a spot of bother and later Marlon Samuels with a gritty run a ball 44 took them over the line. Imran Tahir almost turned the tables with 2 wickets but Carlos Brathwaite ensured that they reach the target.
In the end, West Indies won the game by 3 wickets and 2 balls to spare. Windies thus became the second team after New Zealand to book their spot for the semi-finals. South Africa’s fate now depends upon Sri Lanka beating England and also other things going their way.
