The fifth Super 4 match of the Asia Cup between India and Afghanistan turned out to be a heart-racing thriller as the match ended in a tie. Rashid Khan defended seven runs off the final over to restrict the Indians from their fifth victory in a row. Swashbuckling opening batsman Mohammad Shahzad’s fifth ODI century helped the Afghans post 252 runs in their fifty overs.

Mohammad Nabi’s half-century lower down the order injected impetus into the innings. KL Rahul and Ambati Rayudu put on a 110-run stand after which the Afghan bowlers curbed the Indian batters. Ravindra Jadeja’s wicket off Rashid Khan pulled the curtains down on the match. In the meantime, the umpiring standards during the clash turned out to be a tad below par.

Umpires make some horrendous mistakes

En route his century, Shahzad was once given caught-behind after which the batsman took the review, Replays showed that the leather brushed his shoulders on its way to the keeper. India had to pay a heavy price owing to the indifferent umpiring. Part-time off-break bowler trapped Indian captain MS Dhoni and the umpire raised his finger without much of a hesitation.

However, India didn’t have a review left and hence, Dhoni had to walk back. In the 40th over, Dinesh Karthik was adjudged Leg Before Wicket (LBW). However, later it was shown that the ball would have effortlessly missed the stumps by a fair margin. Even Karthik stood at the pitch in utter bewilderment, looking at the on-field umpire, and eventually had to make the walk back.

The decisions turned out to be pivotal in the context of the match as Dhoni’s men couldn’t have the last laugh. Most of the decisions came from Gregory Brathwaite. In the meantime, Twitter is highly dissatisfied with the poor level of umpiring.
