Twitter thinks Chris Woakes will go unsold in the IPL auction
Woakes played five matches for RCB last season.
Chris Woakes was one of the highly sought players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction last time around. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) went neck and neck for him only to be finally snapped up by the latter franchise. RCB paid him a whopping amount of Rs 7.4 crores after which the cricketer himself was surprised and expressed his elation for playing under Virat Kohli.
But when the tournament proper commenced, Woakes couldn’t live up to the expectations leaking runs in heap. He was taken apart by the opposition batsmen especially in the death overs and went on to concede runs at an economy of 10.36 in the five matches which he turned up. Though Woakes scalped eight wickets as well and had got hold of a purple cap for a brief period.
The RCB decided to release him last month ahead of the next season after poor performances and also mostly due to his availability issues with World Cup set to take place soon after the IPL.
Woakes’ high base price
Chris Woakes is one of the marquee players on the upcoming auction this time. He has set his base price of Rs 2 crores which many feel is a little too high given the fact that he didn’t perform well earlier this year. To add to it, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has set a deadline of April 25 to return home for the players who will be part of the World Cup.
It will be interesting to see if any team bids on him during the auction which is set to take place on December 18 in Jaipur. The marquee players will first go under the hammer on the day even as the unsold players can come back into contention later upon the franchise’s request.
