The quality of umpiring all through the World Cup 2019 has been under the radar as there have been quite a few debatable decision imposed. Though teams have one referral each in limited-overs cricket it has been often that the umpire’s decision has been drastically overturned or stayed due to the lost review. In the final of the World Cup at the Lord’s Cricket Ground – Kumar Dharamsena and Marias Erasmus were handed the officiating responsibilities.

While Erasmus has a positive reputation for his accuracy, his Sri Lankan partner, Dharamsena not so much. The final got underway with Kane Williamson winning the toss and deciding to bat first. New Zealand now had to post a big total on the board and it would take them really close to holding the trophy. However, the innings didn’t start off as they would’ve liked and soon Henry Nicholls was given out lbw by Dharamsena.

Though it hit him in line Nicholls had a doubt in mind. He asked for the referral and there was no bat involved but when the ball tracking displayed the expected trajectory of the ball it brought them a lot of relief. The ball had hit him high on the thigh pad though he was back in the crease would’ve still missed the stumps. The on-field decision was overturned and Nicholls went on to score a half century.

Guptill also got off to a start this time and looked in ominous touch. He threatened to run away with the game but once again was given out leg-before in the 7th over. He decided to review that and there were three reds – review lost. Later in the 23rd over Kane Williamson was out gave not out for a caught behind appeal.

Bowler Liam Plunkett and keeper Jos Buttler were certain they heard something – Eoin Morgan asked for the DRS and there indeed was an edge. The umpire once again was Dharamsena. In the 34th over Erasmus got one wrong and the one to suffer was New Zealand’s big ticket batsman Ross Taylor. As there were no reviews left, the batsman walked back but replays showed that the ball would’ve missed the stumps and once again was an unfair decision imposed on him.

Twitterati wasn’t pleased to see so many discrepancies in the World Cup final and bashed the umpires:
