U19 WC 2018: New Zealand vs Afghanistan, 3rd Quarter-Final – Statistical Highlights

Afghanistan knocked out the hosts New Zealand from the Under-19 Cricket World Cup following a record 202-run win in the quarter-finals. Openers Rahmanullah and Ibrahim Zadran gave a brilliant start after the Afghans elected to bat first. But it was Azmatullah’s devastating innings along with Baheer Shah that powered their total to 309/6. Spinners Mujeeb Zadran and Qais Ahmad bagged four wickets each to wrap up the Kiwis to 107 and help Afghanistan to enter semi-final for the first time in an ICC event.

2 – Four Afghanistan batsman scored 60+ during their innings. This is only the 2nd instance in Youth ODI cricket where four players scored 60+ in the same innings. Australia recorded the first such instance in 2000 against Namibia.
5 – Mujeeb Zadran’s four-wicket haul in this match is his fifth in the 12 Youth ODIs he played so far. These are the joint most number of 4-fers for any player in Youth ODI cricket. Five other players also bagged 4-wicket hauls on five occasions in this format.
7 – Number of sixes Azmatullah Omarzai during his knock of 23-ball 66. These are the 2nd most number of sixes hit by an Afghanistan player in a Youth ODI innings. Darwish Rasooli hit eight sixes in a Youth ODI against Bangladesh last year.
19 – Azmatullah Omarzai’s 19-ball fifty is the joint 2nd fastest ‘known’ fifty in Youth ODI history. Rishabh Pant scored a fifty off 18 balls against Nepal in 2016 U19 CWC while Windies’ Trevon Griffith scored a fifty in 19 balls in 2010 U19 CWC against Pakistan.
107 – New Zealand’s total of 107/10 in this game is their 2nd lowest total in Youth ODI cricket at home. India bowled out them for 103 in 2007.
202 – The 202-run margin in this game is the biggest defeat for New Zealand in the Youth ODIs. Australia defeated the Kiwis by 172 runs in 1996. This is also the 2nd biggest win for Afghanistan in Youth ODIs behind the 226-run win against Fiji in 2016.
202 – Afghanistan’s 202-run win is also the 2nd biggest for any team in a Youth ODI knockout match. India defeated England in the 2006 U19 CWC semi-final by 234 runs.
309/6 – Afghanistan’s total of 309/6 is their 3rd highest total and their first ever 300+ total against a full member nation in Youth ODIs. This also the 5th highest team total by any team in a Youth ODI knockout match.
