Unhappy Shahid Afridi refuses to accept PCB's 'offer'
The final match of the Independence Cup will take place tonight in Lahore.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have successfully brought in the World XI to Pakistan, and so far the games have been conducted in the best possible manner. Cricket fans from world wide have showered their praise on the cricket board. Barring Zimbabwe’s limited overs tour, it was the first time in nearly nine years, that Pakistan have hosted a competitive series.
Former players not happy with PCB
But certain former cricketers of Pakistan were not happy with the way PCB have treated them. It was earlier reported that former all-rounder Shahid Afridi will be playing a farewell match, as suggested by certain section of the officials but many in the PCB set up including current chairman Najam Sethi declined the idea. After a certain point, it was decided that former skipper Misbah-ul-Haq, batting legend Younis Khan and all-rounder Shahid Afridi will be honored at a farewell reception, but both Afridi and Khan were not interested.
Sources close to PCB had said that, Afridi who is currently in Lahore to witness the Pakistan v World XI matches, was asked by chairman Sethi to do a lap of honour with the World XI and Pakistan players in the last T20 match, scheduled to be played at the Gaddafi Stadium on Friday to which Afridi graciously agreed.
Afridi rejects the request
But later, Sethi had asked Afridi to attend the grand reception at a hotel on Thursday and accept an award from the PCB on the stage before going ahead with the lap of honor. It has been reported that Afridi politely rejected the offer and sticked to his decision.
“We are hoping that all the three great cricketers will attend the function to further grace the occasion of the Independence Cup. We wanted to hold the function during an international series and now it is a perfect time to honour the great retired captains when 14 world-class players will be in Lahore,” the Dawn quoted Sethi as said earlier.
