Delhi’s dashing opener Unmukt Chand missed his team’s opening match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the premier domestic one-day tournament match against Baroda on Thursday to attend an University exam. Chand had to clear a paper of his graduation course in order to get his final degree.

He missed his Hindi exam during the first semester and hasn’t attempted ever since. This was his last attempt to clear the paper. As per Delhi University (DU) rules, he would not be able to pass his graduation if he fails on Thrusday.

After attending the exam, Chand in a recent interview said that he had to go for the exam this time since it was his last attempt and that he had already brought this to the knowledge of the team management. “The date-sheet was released a month ago and I knew the exam clashed with the Baroda game. I informed the team, coach and captain well in advance that I will have to take the exam as it was my last attempt. I had missed my Hindi exam due to a packed cricket schedule but this time I had to sacrifice a day of cricket to complete my graduation”. He said.

Delhi played the match without Chand against Baroda. Nitish Rana overshadowed Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan‘s contribution, finding the fence on seven occasions. Pawan Negi’s 47 hurt Baroda, as Delhi recovered from 113/6 to 208/7. Chasing 209, Deepak Hooda pinned some hope with his 76-ball half-century, but Subodh Bhati had other plans. He picked up 4 wickets for 17 runs to see Delhi win its first encounter.
