Up 2-1 in the series Dean Jones wanted India to continue batting for fun at SCG
The Australian bowlers toiled hard at the SCG as they bowled over 1670 overs for their seven wickets.
India cemented their position in the fourth and final Test in Sydney on Friday by crossing 600 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, inching closer to their maiden Test series victory on the Australian soil since Independence. Cheteshwar Pujara caught all eyes on the second day too, falling eventually for 193 while Rishabh Pant hit his second Test century and also the second abroad. India resumed batting from their overnight score of 303 for 4 and went on piling on the runs.
Former Australia batsman Dean Jones took to Twitter to advise Indian captain Virat Kohli to continue with the show instead of declaring the innings saying it was “time to pork a fork in the Aussies!”. He said India had very little to lose since they were 2-1 up in the four-Test series for a draw will give Kohli’s men their much-awaited victory Down Under.
India won the first and third Tests in Adelaide and Melbourne, respectively, while Australia won the second match in Perth. However, given the competitive captain that Kohli is, India will be looking more at a victory than settle with a draw.
Australia have failed to bowl out India since Perth Test
India did declare their first innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 622/7 and it was the third consecutive innings that the visitors declared in this series. They had declared twice in Melbourne despite being reduced to 54 for 5 in the second innings and eventually won the match by 137 runs.
The 500-plus score in Sydney was also the highest India scored in this Test series, bettering the 443 for 7 they scored in the first innings in Melbourne. Pujara has hit three centuries in this series and on the first two occasions, his scores saw India winning the match.
Here is Deano’s tweet:
The Australian bowlers toiled hard at the SCG as they bowled over 1670 overs for their seven wickets with spinner Nathan Lyon picking four wickets to take his series tally to 21 scalps, bettering India’s Jasprit Bumrah. Pat Cummins, who took a six-for in Melbourne failed to take a single wicket in Sydney while spearhead Mitchell Starc could not take more than one.
