Vijay Hazare Trophy, 2017-18, Day 10- Round Up
Thankfully, none of the games today were washed out by the rain gods, which was the case in the last few days.
The tenth day of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy witnessed some high-scoring matches as 18 teams battled to get one step closer to the knockout stage. Thankfully, none of the games today were washed out by the rain gods, which was the case in the last few days. It was the contest between Punjab and Railways which went all the way down to the wire and asked both the teams to play their best to win.
Punjab opener Manan Vohra continued his dazzling stint with the bat and went on to score 143 runs off 148 balls. His innings with few cameos from Yuvraj Singh and Abhishek Sharma’s bat helped them post 280 runs on the board. In the must-win encounter for Punjab, they needed their bowlers to step up and produce a match-winning performance. However, with some firepower in their batting display Railways, and some forgettable bowling spell by Barinder Sran, Punjab didn’t qualify for the knockout stages.
Another dominating performance from the Hyderabad Team helped them to not only become the table toppers but also helped them to qualify for the knockout stage. In a one-way affair in favour of Hyderabad, they posted a respectable total with some superlative batting effort from Bavanaka Sandeep. Chhattisgarh Team fell well short and were bowled out for a mere score of 196 runs.
The three Group C encounters were all about sheer dominance from one end. From the encounter between Andra and Mumbai to the game played between Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Blistering hundred’s from Andra’s skipper G H Vihari and Srikar Bharat helped Andra to finish the league stages with all six wins under their belt. On the other hand, Tamil Nadu batsman found 142-run chase as a walk in the park as the won the match comprehensively.
The Group A encounter between Assam and Haryana witnessed another humiliating loss for the former, which eventually placed them at the bottom of Group A. Batting first, Haryana posted a defendable total of 323 runs with scintillating cameos from Shubham Rohilla and the skipper Rajat Paliwal. In reply, no one really got going for Assam. A 96-run knock from Romario Sharma’s bat was the only good thing happened to Assam today.
With another win under their belt, Baroda Team has qualified for the knockout stages. Having been able to outplay Odisha in today’s encounter. They look rock-solid to go a long way in this contest. With an all-around effort from Krunal Pandya, the victory looked easier than it actually was. With his 84-run knock, Krunal put the opposition on the backfoot. Later, with the ball, he got a couple of wickets to win the game by 57 runs.
With all encounters done and dusted from Group D, it’s Hyderabad and Saurashtra who qualify for the later stages. In the game against Vidarbha, Saurashtra players were at their best to bowl out Ranji Trophy winners for a mere score of 159 runs. In reply, Cheteshwar Pujara played the skipper’s knock along with Avi Barot to help Saurashtra secure an eight-wicket win.
