Vijay Hazare Trophy 2017-18, Day 2 – Round Up

Though the South Africa vs India ODI series has been on populous mind, one will have to say, the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2017-18 isn’t failing to impress with some nail-biting encounters. The day two of the premier one-day tournament witnessed some cracking encounters and involved much-needed firepower. Twelve teams from Group C and D were in action today.

The first match between Hyderabad and Jharkhand witnessed another horsepower performance from Hyderabad as they registered their second victory in two days. Opting to bowl first, Jharkhand bowlers had no answers whatsoever for the superlative batting effort by the top three batters. Rohit Rayadu’s blistering hundred, coupled with Akshatdeep and Sandeep’s quickfire fifties helped them post a mammoth total of 333 runs. In reply, skipper Ishan Kishan and middle-order batsman Atul Singh tried their best but couldn’t help their team cross the winning line.

The Group C game between Gujarat and Mumbai again fell in favour of the team that batted first. A magnificent knock from Siddhesh Lad along with skipper Aditya Tare’s fifty helped Mumbai get a total over 300 runs. Opener and skipper Priyank Panchal scored 89 runs off 96 balls but was short of the partner, which eventually helped Mumbai register their second victory in the tournament.

The third contest between Chhattisgarh and Services witnessed a one-way traffic after an astonishing bowling effort from Shahnawaz Hussain, who went onto to tumble the opposition as he picked a six-wicket haul. His bowling effort helped Chhattisgarh to restrict Services for a mere score of 219. In reply, Shashank Chandraker scored magnificent 70 runs, which eventually ensured Chhattisgarh a victory.

The last Group D encounter between Jammu and Kashmir and Vidarbha witnessed an even contest between bat and ball. Batting first, Vidarbha team was bowled out under 50 overs with a dazzling spell from trio Umar Nissar, Manzoor Dar, and Ram Dayal. However, having already seen how the track behaved, Vidarbha bowlers utilised their strength and were able to wrap up the game in mere 39 overs.

The game between Madhya Pradesh and Andra was a walk in the park for Andra after a dream spell from Girinath Reddy who picked 6 wickets for just 24 runs. Interesting, almost every MP batsman got starts but were not able to convert it. GH Vihari, the Andra skipper played a match-winning knock and took his side to their first win.

The last match of the day between Goa and Tamil Nadu saw a stupendous performance from Goa, who were able to outclass the defending champions in every department. TN skipper Vijay Shankar won the toss and decided to bat first. His decision seemed to have worked after opening pair Murali Vijay and Kaushik Gandhi contributed 89 runs. However, the duo’s departure led TN in a remorseful position and was bowled out for 210 runs. In reply, the experienced campaigner Swapnil Asnodkar registered another List A hundred, which eventually gave them a four-wicket win.
