Former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene felt that violence is not the solution to the change that is demanded in his country and appealed for peace to take over. The 44-year-old is currently part of the IPL 2022 bio-bubble with the Mumbai Indians as the head coach of the side and he has been constantly following the updates in Sri Lanka as well.
The Island nation has been under severe economic crisis in the last month and a state of emergency has also been declared as well. The anti-government protestors in the country went over the line on Tuesday (May 10) by placing a checkpoint on the road leading to the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo to prevent the Rajapaksa family loyalists from fleeing the country. Mahinda Rajapaksa had resigned from the post of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka a day before the incident.
Let’s not let vested interest take over people’s power: Mahela Jayawardene
Jayawardene tweeted reminding the Sri Lankan people about the history of the country where there have been numerous instances of civil war and how it had affected the trust inside the country. He added violence is not the mode of approach needed to bring about changes and acknowledged the disciplined protest for the last 30 days. He added the importance of ensuring people’s power is being used in the right way and called for unity inside the country as well in the tough times.
“History has given us lessons of civil war and distrust among people through race and religion disharmony. Also how it’s been used as a weapon to fulfill its own agendas. Divided We Fall and United We Stand Strong. Always think as Sri Lankan !!” Jayawardene tweeted on Twitter.
“Violence will not achieve the Change we all seeking for and truly amazing discipline everyone showed for the last 30 days. So please let’s not let vested interest take over people’s power,” he tweeted in another post.
