Virat Kohli is a different class, says Kumar Sangakkara
Virat Kohli is third on the list of batsmen with most runs in a calendar year behind Kumar Sangakkara - 2868 runs (2014) and Ricky Ponting - 2833 runs (2005).
Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara has joined the long list of admirers of the Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli. In a recent social media update, Sangakkara went on to quote that Kohli belongs to a different class altogether. In the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka, which the Indian team went on to win 1-0, Kohli aggregated 610 runs in just 5 innings.
His stellar effort with the bat included a century in each Test of the series and two consecutive double tons. Certainly, the Indian skipper ended his calendar year on a high. Virat had a staggering time with the bat in the calendar year of 2017. He has now been rested for the ODI and the T20I series against Sri Lanka.
This, in essence, means that the calendar year has ended for him in international cricket. Virat finished with 2818 runs in the year 2017 – the third highest in a calendar year ever recorded. Kumar Sangakkara leads the chart with a tally of 2868 runs in the year 2014. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting comes in second with 2833 runs amassed in the year 2005.
A renowned journalist posted an update on the same citing that Sangakkara’s record is there to stay for long. He tweeted, “Kumar Sangakkara’s 2868 runs in 2014 will remain as the highest tally ever recorded in a calendar year as Virat Kohli ends year 2017 with 2818 runs #Cricket.”
Sanga’s reply
In reply to this, Kumar Sangakkara expressed his admiration for Virat Kohli. He remarked that with the way Kohli is batting, he is certain to breach the record at some stage or the other. Kohli is a different class, point out Sangakkara.
“I don’t think that will last long the way @imVkohli is batting. He will probably overtake it next year and then do it again the year after. He is a different class,” the former Sri Lankan cricketer wrote in his response to the tweet.
