Virat Kohli rules Indian cricket at the moment; literally. Everything he says is agreed upon or has to be agreed upon by the others. Kohli has earned that respect, he has outperformed every other batsman in the team. Virat Kohli has matured a lot in the last five or six years. A leader has emerged out of an over-aggressive Delhi-boy.
Virat has tasted a lot of success and only some failures. However, the current South Africa tour has not gone according to the plan. The Indian cricket team has handed the host an unassailable lead in the series, losing their first series in over a year. Kohli was absolutely gutted after the loss at Centurion and lashed upon a journalist. The blame game, which the Indian cricket is so used to, has started again.
Who to blame?
‘With great power comes great responsibility’ this famous dialogue from the very first Spiderman movie comes to mind. Virat Kohli is the most powerful man when it comes to Indian cricket. That makes him responsible for almost every win and every loss that India goes through but was he really responsible? India made a lot of mistakes in the second Test match but who was to blame for the same?
Virat Kohli was fabulous with the bat, he scored a magnificent 153 where the other batters failed to get off the mar. The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Shikhar Dhawan and also Hardik Pandya to an extent, failed. The ever so patient Pujara ran himself out in both the innings. Shikhar Dhawan’s shot selection was childlike and Hardik Pandya’s confidence was soaring too high for his own good.
Parthiv Patel’s wicketkeeping skills earned him a lot of stares from his captain while our very own Ishant Sharma couldn’t justify his selection. All these mistakes and yet we fail to identify, who actually is to be blamed for the series loss? Is it really the Indian captain?
The outlandish team selection
The team selection for the first game wasn’t bizarre enough that the Indian management went a step ahead in Centurion. Ajinkya Rahane, India’s best overseas batter and by far the most accomplished number five batsman was left out of the squad, once again. Rohit Sharma was given another chance and he failed, miserably.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the only player who impressed in the first Test apart from Hardik Pandya, was left out. The reason for his exclusion is still unknown. He was left out for another Delhi boy, Ishant Sharma. Ishant was ordinary, which is all one can say looking at his figures. Wriddhiman Saha, India’s second best wicket-keeper was left out for Parthiv Patel. We all know how that fared. All in all, India have lost the series and they are the only ones to be blamed.
