Virat Kohli has a chance to better Inzamam-ul-Haq's record in the Hyderabad Test
Kohli became the fourth highest century-maker for India in the longer format with the ton against Windies in the 1st Test.
Not a single series passes without Indian skipper Virat Kohli eclipsing some record or another with his blade. After smashing records in England on the recent tour, Kohli has returned to cricket in the home series versus the Windies and in the only innings that he has played so far, he has already registered a number of records, some of which even saw him finishing next only to the legendary Donald Bradman.
The second Test between India and Windies will start in Hyderabad on October 12 and Kohli has more records in the offing. Team India won the first Test in Rajkot by an innings and 272 runs, their biggest margin batting first, and one will not be surprised if the No.1 Test side produces another clinical show in the second game against a hapless Caribbean side.
Kohli slammed his 24th Test century in Rajkot and he became the second fastest to do so only after the great Bradman. He also became the first batsman to complete 1,000 Test runs this year and he has done so for the third consecutive year. He also became the fourth highest century-maker for India in the longer format with the ton, going past former opener Virender Sehwag and only has the legendary trio – Sachin Tendulkar (51), Rahul Dravid (36) and Sunil Gavaskar (34) ahead of him.
Kohli just five short of Bradman’s tally
However, even though it might take some time for Kohli to touch the next Indian batsman in the list of Test century-makers, he is just one short of touching former Pakistani captain Inzamam-ul-Haq. Inzamam, who played between 1992 and 2007 and is currently the chief selector of the national team, has 25 Test centuries to his credit and is the second highest ton-maker for his country after Younis Khan (34). Inzi, however, took 120 Tests to reach the milestone while Kohli will be playing his 73rd in Hyderabad.
Inzamam scored 8,830 runs in Tests at an average of 49.60 while Kohli has amassed 6,286 runs so far at an average of 54.66. Kohli is currently tied with Australia’s Greg Chappell, Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf and Windies’ Sir Viv Richards in the list of top century makers. The dashing batsman, who will turn 30 next month, is also just five centuries short of Bradman who scored 29 tons in just 52 games.
