Virat Kohli is all praises for Ravichandran Ashwin and the Indian spinners
Virat Kohli is all praises for Ravichandran Ashwin and the Indian spinners: The Indian cricket team is best placed at the moment in the ICC cricket world cup 2015, two of the biggest games that they were scheduled to play (preliminary round) in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 are done and they were clinical in both; beating opponents Pakistan and South Africa comprehensively. Indian batsmen were always expected to be a threat; but it is their bowlers who have changed the course.
From being wicket-less, getting cleared away from runs, to bowling maidens, they have changed the mode of attack from stopping the flow of runs to chocking the batsmen to get them out. What has also helped them is the fact that the fast bowlers are now striking early and also not leaking away too many runs.
When the Indian vice-captain was speaking to the media he made sure the Indian spinners both Ravichandran Ashiwn and Ravinder Jadeja got the due credit they pretty much deserve.
He was specifically full of praises for Ashwin who first changed the match against Pakistan with three maidens and a wicket, the Pak innings changed course from there. And in the game against South Africa, Dhoni held him back till the left-handers were out in the middle, the plan worked to perfection as Ashwin picked three crucial wickets.
Kolhi said, “Ashwin is a very skillful bowler, and I think he’s at his best when he wants to take wickets. Against Pakistan, he was on top of the batsmen the whole time. It’s more of a mental battle going on the field, and I think he was on the top most of the time when he bowled. To be honest, those maidens in that match, proved to be the game-changer.”
He said though Ashwin did not pick multiple wickets but the impact that he had on the game was important as the team beat their neighbors by 76 runs. “Ashwin only got a wicket against Pakistan, but the way he bowled was absolutely outstanding, especially when you take into consideration you have five fielders in the ring and their spinners could not contain us so much, and the way he bowled in that wicket was pleasing to watch. “He will be a key factor for us as long as he can be in that same mindset that he was in that first game and hopefully he can sustain that through the tournament.” Kohli said.
We have always seen fast bowlers hunt in pairs do spinner do it as well? Kohli agrees to it, he said “If you see, they were our two main bowlers in the Champions Trophy in England. Jadeja was adjudged ‘Best Bowler’. No one then had expected that our spinners will become our main bowlers. They proved everyone wrong then and even if you see here in Australia, they are again doing well,”
About the Ashwin-Jadeja partnership and what the team expects from their spinners Kohli said, “I think their bowling partnership is very important for us. Between the two, they will have to realise, who is going to be aggressive and who is going to play the supporting role,
“If both are aggressive and get 3-4 wickets in an innings, that obviously will be good for us but they are wise and know when to play what role and obviously MS is there to help. So, I think their partnership will be crucial for us,” he further added.
India has been playing with five specialist bowlers in both the matches and the strategy has worked for them. Their squad looks well balanced, they have Jadeja and Ashwin lower down to bat if required and with five bowlers they can always keep the pressure on the batsmen. The best part is that the pacers have been bowling really well and that has allowed MS Dhoni and the Indian spinners to attack than to look to contain.
