The debate has been going around for some time now about who is the best batsman in the world cricket. While the current fab four – Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson – are fighting it out for the top spot, it will be fitting to say that the Indian captain is leading at the moment after the way he batted at Edgbaston. However, VVS Laxman has given his verdict on the same and has also picked the best player in each format.
Kohli was absolutely magnificent during his 149-run knock last week and what made it more special was the way he played with the tail. India added 92 runs for the last couple of wickets which kept them well and truly alive in the game. Many current and former cricketers then agreed over the fact that Kohli is the best batsman in Tests and even ICC confirmed soon after the end of the first game.
Laxman has his say
One of the fans asked VVS Laxman to pick the supreme player across each format and also requested him to pick one player who is best across all the formats. Interestingly, the former India cricketer went with AB de Villiers as the best batsman in the shortest format of the game and undoubtedly it was Kohli in ODIs. However, Laxman picked Steve Smith, the former Australian captain, as the best Test batsman in the modern cricket.
Virat Kohli once again featured in his list as he was also asked to name the common player across all the forms of the game. Even the 43-year-old feels the Indian captain is the best and not many will argue with this fact especially after watching his recent knock against England.
As far as the ongoing Lord’s Test is concerned, the visitors once again are in need of their captain after being reduced to 15/3 under overcast conditions.
