Fans from the other side of the border are unhappy with how Pakistan let them down in their Champions Trophy game against India. The Men in Blue humiliated the arch-rivals by 124 runs, something that the neighbours are finding tough to deal with. But it is not just fans but also former Pakistani players who are disappointed with the way the team performed at the Edgbaston Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Imran Khan, who had led Pakistan to World Cup glory in 1992 dominated the best across the cricketing world in the 90s was left very disappointed with the team’s complete surrender to India. In a series of tweets, the 64-year-old stressed on the need to revamp the cricket structure in Pakistan. Another former Pakistani captain Waqar Younis has echoed Imran Khan’s thoughts.
“We have struggled for the last ten years now, that cricket has not been played in our country, so that’s a big loss,” said Younis, while talking to OSN Sports. The cricketer who played international cricket from 1989-2003 also opined that playing in UAE ever since the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team in Lahore, was not yielding good results for the team in the long run since the Pakistani youth do not get a chance to see their heroes performing ‘in front of them.’
Lack of inspiration in Pakistan
“It doesn’t matter how much cricket you play here in (UAE) it leaves a big affect back home, the kids growing up don’t watch their heroes playing in front of them, so it is affecting us.”
However, he was also optimistic and said that hopefully with more editions of the Pakistan Super League, more talents will be unearthed from the country.
“Hopefully, the PSL going back to Pakistan, hopefully we will have few more games, and things will start getting better,” Waqar concluded.
