Washington Sundar optimistic about clearing Yo-Yo tests in future
Sundar has recently failed the Yo-Yo test at NCA, Bengaluru.
Young Tamil Nadu all-rounder Washington Sundar is having a great time on the field in the recent times. Sundar has grown from strength to strength in the last calendar year. After having impressed in the Rising Pune Supergiant outfit in the IPL this year, he recently helped his side India Blue register a clinical win in the Duleep Trophy finals.
Washington Sundar bagged 11 wickets in the final game to set the tone for the win for his side. While everything was on a merry note for him, what did not work well for him in the recent past was the Yo-Yo test. As per the recent quotes in NDTV, he admitted that he had taken the test at the NCA in Bengaluru. He got to know about his failed result from the media rather than a personal conversation. He is optimistic about clearing the test in the future.
“There was no observation as such. I just went there and did the Yo-Yo test. The next day I came back home and I woke up and saw in newspapers that Washington flunked the fitness tests. Nobody spoke to me. I got to know the results later and did not get to know there on the same day from them,” Washington Sundar quoted.
“If they call me for a test, I will definitely go. I hope they will call me. Hopefully I clear the test in the future,” he added.
On opening the batting
Recently, Murali Vijay’s absence saw Washington Sundar being promoted to the opening slot in the Tamil Nadu batting lineup in the Ranji Trophy encounter against Tripura. Sundar responded well and hit a brilliant 156. Talking about the innings, he expressed his happiness and mentioned he feels good whenever he opens the innings.
“Obviously, it feels good for any youngster to score a hundred. I got an opportunity to open the innings today and I really wanted to make use of the opportunity and I’m glad,” Sundar said.
“Yeah, I think I’m an opening batsman and I enjoy opening the innings wherever I play. But wherever the team wants me to play, I should be ready and should be good enough to contribute in whatever role I may be given,” he quoted.
On being shadowed by Ashwin
In the previous match, Sundar did not get to bowl a lot. This was largely due to the fact that R Ashwin, the senior member, bowled the bulk of the spin overs. Commenting on this, Washington Sundar conceded that he is not disappointed at all. He respects Ashwin and knows that Ashwin is a masterclass when it comes to spin bowling.
“Not at all. Because I know Ashwin. I know he is the No.1 Test bowler or allrounder. So it is definitely important for me to understand those things as well. It’s easy to get frustrated or anything. But I wasn’t even disappointed or upset,” conceded Sundar.
