Wasim Jaffer explains why Rahul Dravid should not be Indian team's permanent head coach
Rahul Dravid is currently in Sri Lanka as the head coach of the white-ball team.
Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer in recent times has become popular on social media by posting cricket-related memes. His posts often are hilarious and have garnered a lot of love from nooks and corners of the cricketing fraternity. Apart from using humor to engage with his fans, he has also started a YouTube channel to express his views on cricket broadly.
In a recent video uploaded to his official YouTube channel, Jaffer gave an unpopular opinion in which he said that Rahul Dravid should remain as the backbone and coach of the India A and U19 team. This opinion comes from him after there were discussions amongst fans on social media that Dravid should be made the head coach of the senior men’s national team permanently.
The former Indian skipper, who has been guiding the U19 and India A side for the past few years is also serving as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Dravid is currently with the Indian team as the stand-in coach for the limited-overs squad which is on their tour to Sri Lanka. Speaking on this matter, Jaffer expressed that Dravid shouldn’t be pushed for a similar role of the national team permanently.
He needs to stay at the NCA for a longer period for our bench strength: Wasim Jaffer on Rahul Dravid
“He is going as a coach of this Indian team to Sri Lanka. I’m sure those youngsters will benefit a lot. I personally feel that he shouldn’t push to become the coach of the national team. And, I feel that he needs to work with these India U19 players and India A players at the NCA. I think the international players who play in the Indian team are a finished product,” the former India opener said.
Jaffer further explained that the mentorship and guidance are required by the U19 and India A players and Dravid can help in making them prepare better for the time when they go to international cricket. “But Rahul Dravid’s mentorship and guidance are more needed at the u-19 and India A level. His guidance is crucial for them to achieve the next level. So I think he needs to stay at the NCA for a longer period of time for our bench strength so that it keeps growing stronger,” Jaffer said.
The former Mumbai batter also credited BCCI for bringing quality young players at the U19 and India A levels. He said much of the credit should go to the BCCI and Rahul Dravid for managing to create a huge bench strength for the Indian team.
