Fans are known to create festive atmosphere across the venues in the world hosting T20 matches. Taking a catch in the stands is an exciting prospect for most fans attending a match. A match in South Africa witnessed arguably the coolest and the most effortless crowd catch ever in cricket. Cricket fans attending the RAM SLAM T20 Challenge had a million more reasons to be at the 2015 season’s RAM SLAM action around the country.
RAM Hand to Hand Couriers announced an exciting new reason for fans to attend matches in South Africa’s premier T20 tourney. Lucky fans who successfully took a single-handed catch at a televised RAM SLAM match became eligible to win a share of one million Rand. To qualify for the Prize it had to be a clean, one-handed catch of a ‘six’ hit during a televised RAM SLAM Cricket match (juggling the ball with one or two hands was not be accepted as a clean catch); The one-handed catch had to be clearly visible on the stadium replay screen and broadcast TV camera as it was subjected to audit.
Opening the batting, South African international Wayne Parnell blitzed 99 – his first T20 fifty – to help Cape Cobras hunt down 154 against the home team Lions with six wickets to spare in Johannesburg. Against his Proteas teammate, left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso, Parnell spanked a humongous six. The ball went high and eventually carried all the way into the stands where a big man was seen patiently to get his hands on it.
Even as other patrons wondered about the landing of the ball, this gentleman was calm and he judged it beautifully to pluck it out of the thin air. He didn’t move an inch and used his reach to the fullest to make it a memorable grab. Eventually, this man became one of the 10 cricket fans who shared a million rand prize at the end of the competition.
