Watch: Brett Lee hammers a six that smashes the car window
At the Gymkhana Club Ground in Nairobi on 7th October 2000, Brett Lee hammered a massive six out of the ground that damaged a car window. India though won this famous match against old foes Australia. Arguably the game of the tournament, the India – Australia quarterfinal of the ICC Knock Out (Champions Trophy) had many thrilling moments.
In his first international innings, the then 18-year-old Yuvraj Singh displayed astonishing poise, thrashing the opposition’s star-studded attack for 84 off 80 balls. No other batsman reached 40 though Sachin Tendulkar’s violent assault on McGrath’s new-ball spell gave India much of their momentum and remains one of the most talked about moments in the India – Australia rivalry.
Chasing 266 from 48 overs and the Aussies needing 73 off 51 balls, Lee hammered Zaheer Khan out of the ground with the biggest hit of the day and then drove Anil Kumble for six over long-off to keep the target in sight. The beginning of the 43rd over though proved pivotal as Zaheer cleaned up Steve Waugh for 23 and all of Australia’s hopes now rested on the shoulders of Lee.
Only a single came off the over and with five overs left, Australia still needed 41 to win. And then Lee went, mistiming a pull off Ajit Agarkar for Ganguly to dive forward and hold the catch at midwicket. Brett Lee’s cameo had produced 31 off 28 balls, but Jason Gillespie and Glenn McGrath were all Australia was left with and they eventually fell short by 20 runs.
