Watch: Promo of last game of MS Dhoni as captain makes fans nostalgic
MS Dhoni is arguably the most popular name in Indian cricket circle of the modern era. The man from Ranchi made giant strides in the game ever since making his international debut. He might have failed in his first three appearances in the India colours, but he surely more than just covered up for it in the years to come. A brilliant 148 against Pakistan at Vizag is still etched in the memory lanes of every cricket fan. In no time, MS Dhoni was rewarded with the role of India’s captain for the inaugural ICC World T20 in South Africa in 2007.
The new captain and the new look Indian team under his leadership did the improbable. India emerged victorious in the tournament and Dhoni had announced himself as the next generation leader of the team. Rahul Dravid’s stepping down from the ODI captaincy saw Dhoni as the ideal successor in ODIs.
It was only a matter of time that Dhoni became the full-time captain of the Indian team in all the three formats of the game. He managed to lead India to the number one rankings in Test cricket. It was under his leadership that India won the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. The only ICC trophy that eluded him was the Champions Trophy. He got that too in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in England.
There is no denial of the fact that MS Dhoni is arguably the best and most successful Indian captain of all time, if not the best in the world cricket. Former English cricketer Nasser Hussain rates MS as the best captain of the white cricket ball in the world. But as they, all good things come to an end. Dhoni stepped down as the Test captain in 2014. And recently, he took everyone aback with his decision to step down as the limited overs captain of India team.
The players and the fans could not even get a farewell match for Dhoni – the captain. Dhoni – the player is here to stay, but Dhoni as a captain will be seen only one more time in Indian colours. The Star Sports promo of Dhoni’s last match as captain in India’s colours will make all fans nostalgic for sure. Dhoni will lead India A in the warm-up match against England on January 10. Do not miss the captain lead one last time.
